Dominique Andiran 'Magnus' Merlot 7102

GasCôtes de Gascogne, France

Wondering what the numbers mean in the product title? Flip them for the vintage year. Being close to Bordeaux, Merlot is grown here in abundance and well. If you like delicate, slightly sweet and full bodied reds then you will enjoy this red. Hand-harvested grapes and destemmed before fermentation. There is no pressing down or pumping over, the grapes are left to do their own thing. The resultant juice is left to mature for about 8 to 12 months without any manipulation. Blackberries, leather, smoke and spice. Crisp and sweet start to start, but becoming more tart with a long finish. Perfect wine for food.

About the maker

Once a ski and sailing instructor, Dominique Andiran started small in 1988 by helping his uncle out and now organically managing 20,000 hectares for producing natural wines.

In accordance with French practice, Dominique either owns or rents several plots of vines spread across many kilometres in the area of the Gers départment in South-West France around the village of Montreal-du-Gers. There he has plots of Chardonnay, Colombard, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, Sauvignon Rose, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Tannat. Often grown in limestone soils his wines are always wonderfully reflective of the terroir, in this instance, full of vibrancy and minerality.
