2019 Smallfry Cinsualt Grenache Mataro Rosé

Barossa Valley, South Australia

A pale dry rose made from Cinsault, Grenache and Mataro from the Smallfry Vine Vale vineyard in the Barossa Valley. The grapes are foot stomped into the bins after hand harvesting, left on skins overnight then drained to tank for wild yeast fermentation and spontaneous malolactic fermentation. Bottling with lees and without stabilisation gives a generous mid to back palate. The wine is slightly cloudy and may throw a little tartrate crystal but this will not affect the flavour. Light and mostly dry, with a touch of strawberry sweetness. Light refreshing and complex.

About the maker

Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens, 'viticulturists bitten by the winemaking bug' took their chance to turn their own fruit into wine and what a positive decision that turned out to be.

With natural ferments, nil to minimal adjustment, old oak and a soft hand in the cellar allows their vineyard to speak. Their style is food friendly, Euro style, with a eye to balance and subtlety. From Smallfry: 'The essential component is great fruit, we are lucky enough to own two very special vineyards, one in Eden Valley and the other in Vine Vale in the valley floor. The Eden Valley vineyard has been established by us since 1994, while the Vine Vale block has been the Schlieb’s family seat for generations, with the last incumbent putting in 52 vintages before hanging up his snips.'
