2019 Slow Lane Pinot Gris

Birdwood, Victoria

Dom sourcing pretty tasty gris from a small block in Birdwood. It is not yet organic certified, but there are no herbicides, fungicides or anything used. Open fermented for a week on skins and then pressed off to barrel for 14 months. It's round, phenolic, but with lots of prominent fruit and a little grip. On the nose we get wild berries and in the mouth it's savoury, saline and mineral driven. Gentle acid. Pair with a nice winter meal and lightly chill.

About the maker

Dom Smith is the man with a shed in McLaren Vale who is making delicious, easygoing wines that toes the line between nouveau and classic.

Growing up in Mt Gambier and then moving to Victoria to study teaching, Dom couldn't get the idea of making wine out of his mind. After taking a risk and making his own wine at his new-found home in Adelaide, he decided to join a couple of more experience makers for some vintages. Dom and his mentor Bevan Ferguson at Massey Wines source their grapes locally and he works intuitively with what he has rather than a set formula. With never any adds.
