2019 Mataburro Idoine Merlot
About the maker

Relatively fresh into the natural wine scene, Mataburro is Laurent Roger and Melissa Ingrand’s project named for the railway line that was known to kill three donkeys shortly after opening in 1910.

Although relatively new on the market, the Mataburro wines are already highly sought after and once you try you will understand why. Laurence's family has a long history of winemaking, with three hectares of Grenache in Rivesaltes planted by his grandfather in 1949. To maximise soil life and quality there is no ploughingg, using green manure planting instead. Vineyards are worked organically with the only treatments used sulphur, copper and some essential oils. Winemaking uses native yeast with no fining or filtration. Soils are mostly clay on limestone with some galets roulés for the old Grenache vines and deep clays for the Merlot. Climate is Mediterranean with maritime influence. The wines are known for their delicacy and freshness, the mark of Laurent’s teacher shining through.
