2019 Gabrio Bini Serragghia Fanino

Sicily, Italy

If you know Gabrio Bini, then you would know he is an absolute Sicilian lord. Fanino Serragghia is a rustic and spicy red wine, made from white and red Pignatello and Catarratto grapes, vinified in open-air amphoras buried in the tufaceous soil. It has a soft pinkish color and aromas of sweet spices, flowers, and ripe red fruits. It's a bit of a volcanic flex at the dinner table to be honest.

2019 Gabrio Bini Serragghia Fanino
About the maker

Gabrio Bini’s Azienda Agricola Serragghia is located on the island of Pantelleria, a volcanic mass one hundred kilometres or so south west of Sicily.

Whilst Gabrio makes weird and wonderful things like capers and a passito unlike any other, he also happens to be famous for his vino. The most famous being his Zibibbo secco and “Fanino”, a fresh, pure blend of red and white grapes.

Gabrio’s grapes come from old vines planted over ancient terraces on the island’s volcanic soils. Higher than most vineyards, Serragghia experiences a cool sea breeze and temperatures are surprisingly moderate, even in the height of summer.

The vineyards are never treated and are tended by hand and horse. Grapes are handpicked and left to ferment long and slowly in terracotta amphorae of various ages and sizes from Spain which are buried in the vineyard. They are bottled unfiltered, with no additions.
