2019 Entropy Wines 'Warragul' Syrah

Gippsland, Victoria

An incredible Syrah like you've never tasted before. As Ryan advocates, wine is not about the variety or winemaking, it's about the place. From 38 year old vines in Warragul, Gippsland that are biodynamically farmed by William Downie and Patrick Sullivan. The soils are volcanic, never been irrigated and have seven different Syrah clones. Whole bunches are lightly pressed and a week of fermentation and then pressed off after another week. Aged in puncheon and barrique. She is intricate, delicate, full of violets, floral with bright red and purple fruit overseen by very balanced acidity. A tiny amount of tannins poking through.

About the maker

A man of many talents Ryan Ponsford, also a creative photographer, has set off on a path of winemaking in the Gippsland and he wants more people in in Australia to understand that wine should be about place not maker nor variety.

Surrounded by talented winemakers like William Downie and Patrick Sullivan, alongside a really unique landscape, after only a few years, Ryan is already producing a set of captivating wines. Do not expect your Barossa Shiraz or Mornington Pinot Noir, but rather varieties that come from a certain place. Found in West Gippsland, with very few others, a unique combination of elevation, climate and soil gives way to wines that aren't expected.
