It's hard to walk past Eduardo Acosta. One of the smallest natural wine productions you will find in Sicily and from vines older than us that have varieties that span back to the Roman empire. 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% comprising of a field blend, The Nerello comes from a 50 year old abandoned vineyard and spends 16 months in Slavonian oak. She has dark fruit with hints of forest floor spices and ridiculously silky, tannic and very elegant. Drink now or even better in 5 years.

About the maker

Eduardo Torres Acosta, a young winemaker from the Canary Islands, has worked with the likes of Ariana Occhipinti before building up his own patch of Sicily, with his wines being of the most miniscule production and highly sought after.

Eduardo now manages a total off 4.5 hectares of vines, spanning white varieties like Catarratto, Grecanico and Carricante and reds like Nerello Mascalese, Alicante and Garnacha. Two single vineyards are produced, Pirrera and Quota N. Pirrera comes from a single contrada located at 850 meters in altitude and the name of the vineyard, Pirrera, refers to the volcanic stones which were extracted from a quarry during a lava flow in 1614. Most of his parcels were restored, slowly bringing the vines back to health in the most natural means, yet they are incredibly old and now producing some incredible fruit.
