2019 A Los Viñateros Bravo 'Volcanico' País

Itata Valley, Chile

País is the Chilean name for a Spanish grape. Traditionally it’s been used for making bulk red wine, until recently, where quality-minded winemakers are crafting tart, high-tannin reds made from very old vines. 100+ year old bush vines with almost zero-input agriculture. The vines are free standing and growing. The wine is tannin rich and strong elements of mineralogy from the volcanic soil. Think of stones, light fruits and lots + lots of tannins.

About the maker

Leo has worked all over the world, has a Masters in terroir and is a geology fiend; driven to bringing the soils of Itata, Chile to the world.

Leo's business model is simple, developing long-term relationships with a small number of traditional growers, paying them well, picking early and practising minimal fiddling in the winery. Itata Valley was once a very famous wine-producing region. The first vineyards in Itata were planted around the 1500s near the bay of Concepción. Today, however, the Itata Valley represents a forgotten viticulture region in Chile. The likes of Leo, as well as others are out there, are certainly doing their best to revive it.
