2018 Lou.y Es-Tu? 'Nouveau' Beaujolais-Villages Gamay

Beaujolais, France

Beautiful perfume of roses, cherries, rocks and a touch of aniseed. Very fresh and supple on palate. Sweet fruit with a darkish core, littered with gentle baking spice and slightly savoury herbaceous notes. She becomes crunchy with time, and opens up with air. Dark blackberries, boysenberries and purple florals become more apparent. It has a fine mineral line through it, representing the granite soil of the parcel. Full mid palate, with late onset mineral tension. This is very easy and drinkable at 12.5% and of course is best served with a chill. Made from 40 year old vines (their youngest). Short carbonic maceration for 5 days, then remained in tank until bottling in mid-October 2018. Thanks to Ryan Larkin for the notes.

About the maker

Stephen Durieu started Lou. Y Es-Tu back in 2000, although his family have been making wine in the area since 1755. The entire domaine has had organic certification since 2007

Stephen and Mathilde maintain around 7ha in vineyards, mainly in the commune of Saint Saint-Étienne-des-Oullières. The vines range from 30 years of age to over 100 years old. These old vines are very low yielding, but produce extremely concentrated and complex fruit. The soils are predominately made up of granite, but you can find quartz and all sorts of ancient rock in amongst the vines, all key to the the detail you find in the final product. The wines are all vinified in the same way - carbonic maceration, no tricks, and no additives, except for 10ppm SO2 at bottling. Élevage is for different lengths of time depending on cuvée, and all are in concrete tanks
