2018 Roberto Henriquez 'Rivera Del Notro Tinto' País

Itata and Bio Bio Valleys, Chile

País is the Chilean name for a Spanish grape, Listán Prieto. Traditionally it’s been used to make bulk red wine, until recently, where quality-minded natural winemakers are crafting tart, high-tannin reds made from País old vines.

This region is a pretty special place. Roberto Henriquez uses fruit from 200+ year old vines, mixed soils, granite and in parts of the vineyard deep volcanic sand with almost zero-input agriculture. The grapes are hand de-stemmed on traditional bamboo screens, stainless steel ferment and ageing. The wine is herbaceous, pretty fruit, high acid, a serious yet joyful expression of País.

2018 Roberto Henriquez 'Rivera Del Notro Tinto' País - Chilean Red
About the maker

Roberto is another young and professionally trained winemaker who, like others in Chile, decided to make a permanent move down south to make exciting wines from Chile’s endemic varietals and from incredibly old rootstock.

Aside from running his own vineyards in Bio Bio, Roberto works with a handful of small growers in Itata, working closely with them in the transition to organic agriculture and paying them high prices which allow them to keep growing. The key to his success has been in producing wine made from 200-year-grapes located at the southern end of the Bio Bio riverbank. País vines are an integral part of history, culture, tradition and character of Chilean terroir.
