2018 Mauricio Gonzalez Moscatel 'Tinaja' - Chilean Orange

Bio Bio Valley, Chile

Fruit from Mauricio's neighbour with vines around eighty years old. The cool climate Moscatel picked early lends itself to a fresh, less aromatic side as the skins don't harden against the sun. The grapes were fermented in Tinaja (amphorae) vessels, over 120 years old, for three weeks before topping and a further six months on skins. Extended lees (dead yeast particles) in the vessel builds a full wine. This is a beautiful textural, chalky and wonderfully zesty. A superb 'orange'/skin contact white! Thanks to Cultivar for the notes.

2018 Mauricio Gonzalez Moscatel 'Tinaja' - Chilean Orange Wine
About the maker

Astonishingly Mauricio Gonzales makes wine in Southern Chile the same way it has been done for centuries after purchasing and restoring an abandoned vineyard on original rootstock.

Mauricio, once working as both a viticulturist and winemaker for commerical companies, packed the family up and moved south to begin working on restoring an old winery. He also works closely with his neighbour on a particular grape, ferments in original lagar de rauli (five thousand kilo vessels of native beechwood) or in original tinaja (forgotten amphorae) and then ageing in original Pipa, tinaja or old barrels and completely avoiding S02.
