2018 Le Batossay 'Ouech Cousin' Grolleau

Loire Valley, France

Baptiste Cousin, has begun to take over parcels from his father after 30 years of winemaking in the most beautiful and delicate manner. This wine is Grolleau from old vines, macerated in whole bunches for 10 days and 6 months of ageing in tanks. The grapes came out of the vines on horseback, then brought back to the cellar in a box, pressing was done with the last vertical press of my great grandfather. The juices racked / filtered naturally with gravity (rare use of a wine pump) and bottled mainly by hand. Like a big hug, dark fruit, tobacco and pepper.

About the maker

Le Batossay (Baptise Cousin) is tended to by son of esteemed vigneron, Oliver Cousin, who has passed on most of the vineyard management and winemaking, but still mentors him through his early years to continue the lineage of incredible Loire wines.

The spirit of Oliver remains throughout the vineyard, working the vines with horses and biodynamic preparations, with no added sulphur or any other additives ever coming in contact with the wine. The wines possess elements of wilderness, natural purity not only unique to their parcel, but also represent a step up in the evolution of precisely made natural wines. The varieties that Baptiste tends to are Gamay, Grolleau, Chenin Blanc and Pineau d’aunis.
