2017 Monastero Suore Cistercensi 'Ruscum' White Blend

Lazio, Italy

Cult wine alert. Monastero Suore is a commune of nuns who only pray and make wine. See below for this truly unique story. This 'orange' wine is a blend of four local white varietals, Trebbiano, Malvasia del Lazio and Verdicchio (40, 35, 25). The orange colour and tannin grip to it, is through 15 days of allowing the juice to sit on skins. Aromas of herbs and yellow fruits, whilst tasting of baked cakes and caramel.  Ok chill it's still a wine. But very balanced acidity, all in all a 10 out of 10 if you're into white blends.

About the maker

An hour drive from Rome, you will find a monastery, opened in 1957, with now around 80 sisters who live by the principle of pray and work; tending to vineyards and making exceptional wine.

The sisters have been organically farming their five hectares of vines for decades, but it wasn't until Giampiero Bea began consulting to them in the early 2000s that their wines gained a larger audience. Today their wines are a huge hit, they have a cult like following and sell out shortly after releasing. The vineyards, orchards and gardens are cultivated organically and without the use of machinery. The wines are made with low-intervention practices and naturally occuring yeasts.
