2017 Farnea 'L'Arietta' Merlot

Farnea cantina consists of a small room at the edge of Marco’s house filled with concrete and fibreglass vats, old barrels and not much else. It's with only these tools and the grapes that Marco uses to make his wines.

Named after the wind which cools the valley he calls home, this Merlot from a forty year old vineyard puts to shame the connotations the grape brings to some. Fermented on skins for a fortnight and aged in old barrels for eight months this is both light on its feet and pleasantly savoury, with notes of black fruits, olives, herbs and spice.

About the maker

Marco Burrati lives his life with minimal possessions, almost monk like, and makes his wines in exactly the same manner. Only grapes, barrels and tanks.

Marco Buratti’s Azienda Agricola Farnea is in the far north of Italy with around two hectares of vines and three hectares of woodlands as part of the Colli Euganei National Park. The rich volcanic soils of the area have drawn vignerons in since early in the eighteenth century. All the grapes are hand harvested, the fields are worked without any chemicals and the wines are untouched through the process. The resultant wines represent the forest so superbly well that it creates a truly unique tasting set of wines.
