About the maker
Beginning in 1990 with a small conventional planting, Jennifer and John Nagorcka took a completely different approach to their cultivation practices in response to a cool climate that was similar to Burgundy.
John and Jennifer's family vineyard forms part of a larger farm area (700 acres) which is all simply named Hochkirch, a name given to it by its German settlers. The fruit from their home vineyard is bottled as Hochkirch and the neighbouring vineyard that is co-owned and managed, lies under Tarrington Vineyards. Their plot lies 250m above sea level, north facing and the terrain is red-brown basalt over stony gravel. Biodynamic vineyard management involves both observations of the lunar and planetary cycles, as well as natural preparations to nurture and enliven the earth's soil. 2003 was the first year of Hochkrich's fully Demeter certified production. The focus of the vineyard is on pinot noir, with lesser but just as eye-opening quantities of riesling, chardonnay, semillon and shiraz.
