2015 Christian Tschida Laissez Faire Pinot Blanc

Burgenland, Austria

Grassy, earthy nose with herbs and delicate apple pie when drinking. 40 year old vines of Pinot Blanc. Dry but rich from a bit of purposeful oxidative handling. The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, and crushed by foot. The juice ferments in large barrels and spends 2 years aging in large barrels.Grassy, earthy nose with aromas of apples, pears, summer alfalfa fields at night, and grass. Fairly dry, though rich in an oxidative way.

About the maker

Christian is another young winemaker with an astounding story from Burgenland in Austria, having inherited vineyards kept by his family since the 19th century.

Cultivating around 10 hectares of old vines sitting in soil comprising mostly of sandy gravel, schist and limestone, all benefiting lovely moderation from the nearby Lake Neusiedler. His wild looking parcels are instantly recognisable - overgrown with cover crops that both preserve biodiversity in the vineyards and force the vines to bury their roots deep into the soils in search of nutrients. Christian takes a hands-off approach to winemaking, where the wines spend a great deal of time in barrel in contact with oxygen, some for as many as 5 years before bottling.
