2015 A Los Viñateros Bravo 'Volcanico' País

Itata Valley, Chile

País is the Chilean name for a Spanish grape, Listán Prieto. Traditionally it’s been used for making bulk red wine, until recently, where quality-minded, natural winemakers are crafting tart, high-tannin reds made from País old vines.

This region is pretty special place. The winemaker is Leo Erazo, he has tended to 100+ year old bush vines with almost zero-input agriculture. The vines are free standing and growing. The wine is tannin rich and strong elements of mineralogy from the volcanic soil. Grapes were handpicked and naturally fermented in concrete tanks. With one decantation the wine is left to naturally clarify in the porous concrete, one very coarse filtering

About the maker

Leo has worked all over the world, has a Masters in terroir and is a geology fiend; driven to bringing the soils of Itata, Chile to the world.

Leo's business model is simple, developing long-term relationships with a small number of traditional growers, paying them well, picking early and practising minimal fiddling in the winery. Itata Valley was once a very famous wine-producing region. The first vineyards in Itata were planted around the 1500s near the bay of Concepción. Today, however, the Itata Valley represents a forgotten viticulture region in Chile. The likes of Leo, as well as others are out there, are certainly doing their best to revive it.
