2014 Huaso De Sauzal Cariñena Carnigan

Maule Valley, Chile

A wine to experience Chile's understated winemaking history and also bridge your way into natural wines. Bright, strong tannins, acidity and great structure. The Carnigan (Chilean grapes) comes from 4 different sites. All granite soils. Traditional vinification, fully destemmed manually using wooden zarandas (screens of native bamboo). Wild, open ferment in a very big and old raulí lagar for thirty days. Ageing in old barriques for twelve months before careful blending. Bottle ageing for a further twelve months. Unfined, unfiltered and zero SO2. The wine is suited for simple yet rich food.

About the maker

Having worked as a viticulture consultant for many years, Renan Cancino returned to his village Sauzal to focus on the país grape and bolster his community's economy.

Renan practices traditional rotational agriculture between wheat and sheep, supporting his small neighbours by buying their grapes at sustainable prices. This means paying them higher prices to keep them doing what they are doing and do best. Renan's story of winemaking is quite warming. He avoids all SO2, filtering and fining in his delicate winemaking.
