Sofia's Etna Bianco Gioacchino is made from Carricante (90), Catarratto (10), and Minella bianca grown in the intensely volcanic soil that is Etna. Destemmed and macerated for two days. An easy drinking call it an orange with nice stone fruit notes, lots of minerals, almost salty, a zesty finish and a nice tartness. Abv 13%.

About the maker

Azienda Agricola Sofia is a relatively new winery located in Solicchiata on the north side of Mount Etna. Gioacchino Sofia and his family have a long history of farming in the area

In 1980, he received just under half an hectare from his father of an old vineyard in Contrada Piano dei Daini in Solicchiata. Over time the family was able to acquire neighbouring pieces of vineyards. Currently the family owns about 3 hectares in total, 2 on volcanic soil in Solicchiata and one on clay soil in the famous Contrada of Pietra Marina, about 3 kilometers from Solicchiata. Until recently all of the wines were sold locally. Gioacchino's children, Carmelo and Valentina, officially created Azienda Agricola Sofia with their first vintage in 2017, including the name of their father, La Vigna di Gioacchino, on the label, and have begun exporting tiny amounts of their stunning wines and now available in Australia
