2016 Benoit Camus Vagabond Gamay

Beaujolais, France

If you have not tried a Beaujolais Gamay, let us tell you, this is the place to start. This is really special wine, from a reserved parcel of Benoit Camus of which only a few hundred bottles are produced for everyone globally. On the nose strong green vines and vegetable notes. On the pallet, a subtle earthy taste and a nice, not an over amount, of tannins that lightly grip the sides of your cheeks. It's high in acidity, but this only provides a beautiful crispness, it's medium-low body and shows pretty fruit of blackcurrants and raspberries. Gamay pairs perfectly with different styles of cooked chicken or for the vegetarians, particularly well with spanakopita.

About the maker

Benoit Camus the man and the wine reside in a village Ville-sur-Jarnioux in Beaujolais, where he produces a very small and very rare quantity of wines every year.

Benoit Camus produces most of his wine under Phillipe Jambon's 'negotiant' label. From his 5ha plot, he produces a tiny amount each year for his own bottling. Benoit’s winemaking is slow and careful. Perfect fruit is fermented in concrete tank, usually as whole bunches then pressed after he deems the time is right. The soil is rich in limestone, leaving a freshness, slight chalkiness and uplifting nature to his wines.
